There are several types of guitar chords, barre, major, minor, seventh, sixth, suspended, slash and diminished chords; they can be played in certain combinations following a set scale or spontaneously to create your own unique patterns.
Each chord is named according to the root note going from A to G, for example if you play the chord of C then one of your fingers will be pressing down on the C note.
As a beginner wondering how to learn to play guitar chords it's best to start by learning the major and minor ones or open chords because one or more strings are strummed with an open string. All of the other chords are built around these open chords, which are played using only the first 3 frets on the guitar neck making it relatively easy to remember them.

Luckily a new form of guitar notation (called "Table") was created, which is much more straight forward and easily learned in less than an hour.

As with the older written notes table uses 6 lines to show the strings of the guitar, but instead of using drawn notes simple numbers are printed on each line to represent the fret that needs to be pressed.
