Mastodon DVD

Mastodon, a live beast
I've seen Mastodon live once. Before that I knew their work thanks mostly to "Crack the Skye", an album that made a huge impact on me and made me think one thing: This is how the twenty first Century sounds like.
On the later decades of the past Century, when rock and metal came to the public eye (or ear for that matter), a lot of bands created styles and new ways to write and play this kind of music; however, few artists have been capable of giving real evolution to the genre. Mastodon is special because it does just that. The band evolves faster than the genre they align themselves to.
When I saw Mastodon live they were the opening band for Metallica, and I was really impressed by the high quality of their performance. It was up to the sound of their records, as precise as a Swiss clock and as punishing as the prehistoric animal they get their name from. But because of the fact that they were opening for the San Francisco veterans, a lot of the people in the audience (me included) were left hungry for more.
The good news is that we can watch Mastodon live on their DVD "Mastodon: Live at Aragon", a live concert recorded on October 19th of 2009. The video captures the best of their music and their strength, along with their mystique and sophisticated aesthetics.
Mastodon goes through "Crack the Skye" in its entirely, adding "Circle of Cysquatch" off the album "Blood Mountain", "Where Strides The Behemoth" and "Mother Puncher" off "Remission" and "Aqua Dementia" off "Leviathan". They also treat us with a cover version of the song "The Bit" of the band "The Melvins".
But the good things don't come to and end there. The DVD includes "Crack the Skye: The Movie" a tour film that runs for about 58 minutes with all the imagery that is projected behind the band on their live performances. This feature is really interesting, since it connects fans with the more "artsy" and visual side of the band.
In conclusion, "Mastodon: Live at Aragon" is a fantastic item that no Mastodon fan or metal enthusiast should overlook or take for granted. The live beast will destroy your home and won't let you escape, and with every song it will reaffirm: Rock is not dead, and we're here to prove it.
