Southern Gospel music is one of the earliest forms of contemporary music in America. It has a rich history deeply rooted in the very fabric of the South and used as a venue to praise or thank God. The origin
Southern Gospel music is a spinoff of original Gospel music that is a combination of Christian lyrics and forms of American music such as jazz and bluegrass. It originated in the 18th and 19th centuries by slaves that composed and sang these songs amongst themselves as a form of code to communicate with one another. Once the revivalist churches got a hold of it, it began to spread throughout the south from traveling preachers and groups of men singing groups. Then in 1910 in began to take a new form called Southern Gospel. It was primarily in all white Southern churches sung by all male trios in quartets.
The History
In the 1920's southern gospel really began to take off. At this time, there were many of the all male quartets traveling with the Southern preachers at tent revivals and church meetings. It was sort of like today's modern concert tour without all the luxuries. They gave people all over the South a chance to hear Southern Gospel music for the first time. Instruments were then introduced in the 1920's and 1930's with the inclusion of pianos and banjos that gave it an entire new flair. In the late 1930's and into 1940's southern radio stations began recording Gospel artists and then in the 1950's they began producing and distributing records. This had a major influence on young Southern artists such as Elvis Pressley, Johnny Cash and the Blackwood Brothers just to name a few. Little did we know at that time it would create such a seismic shift in American music history.
It's progression through the 1950's and into the 1960's was monumental as southern country and rock 'n roll artists began to infuse their version of Southern Gospel music in to their own style. This had a tremendous impact on how the music genre would take shape over the next 50 years and become what it is today.
Today it is a diverse genre of American music. The 70's 80's and 90's all produced many artists in many different music genres that all became Southern Gospel artists from the Oak Ridge boys to rock 'n roll bands such as striper they all used the origins of Southern Gospel music as their modern-day platform to create their own sound and make their mark. It is an ever-changing and significant piece of American music history that evolves with each passing decade and new generation of artists. Alternative rock is one of my favorite genres of music. Actually, it may be my favorite of all. I can usually find such passion and emotion in these types of songs. What makes it better is when that passion and emotion is accompanied by a substantive message. In my opinion, Flyleaf is one such band that utilizes that combination in their music. When I first listened to their latest album "Memento Mori" I was often moved to tears. Once I read the fictional journal entries they created in explanation of each song, while listening to the music, I was moved to full waterworks. These entries display examples of such love, conviction and commitment. In addition, the light is shown on the desperate circumstances of many who attempt to live as if everything is okay when it really isn't. However, a picture is lyrically painted of the grace and mercy that is available to all.
The music contained in this article is a great motivator for me. Oftentimes, I can get bogged down by the heavy weight of apathy - simply reaching a place of complacency where, in reality, I am dissatisfied with my current circumstances but not enough to do anything about it. One song in particular serves as a reminder of the comfort that can be mine when I hold out my arms for it. Another song encourages me to take the focus off myself and consider where another person is coming from and what his/her reality may be. In order to show a unified front we must be united in Truth. The Commission is great and is the responsibility of the ENTIRE body. This song calls us to come together in order to achieve the Goal. "Unified diversity! Functioning as body..."The magnitude of the Mission can be overwhelming. But we are not called to solitary work. There is a Reference to multiple parts of the body for a reason and we are expected to assist each other in accomplishing our goals. So often it is said that it is intended that more than what we can handle would never be put upon us. But it would be useful for us to grasp the fact that humans are quite capable of taking on more than we can handle under the false pretense that we are helping or being of service. It is very difficult to be any use when we continuously, albeit unknowingly, set ourselves, and often the Mission, up for failure. Memento Mori - Time is Short! We need to recognize that failure is unavoidable when we are spread too thin. It is easy to give up when we believe that too great a burden has been placed upon us by Another. This song serves as a reminder that the "yoke is easy and the burden is light". Although the weight of compassion may feel heavy in our heart, the reality of the change needed should never feel heavy on our shoulders. Many times the seemingly unlovable appear that way for a reason. Not living in the light is deceptive. Looking in the mirror and only seeing the lie of the fascade is numbing. In the dark, there is no true perception of reality. The lie is comforting. Although our society is more than willing to go through the litigation process over the most minor of offenses, we seldom hear any cries of outrage over the truly offensive. Dishonor, perversion, agreed, selfishness all get overlooked as many seek to justify their own "personal truth".
This reality can be overwhelming and soon it become easy to harden ones heart. Yet no matter how frustrated we get we must never allow this to happen. Memento Mori - The Time is Now! Some many are being devoured by darkness but we have been given the responsibility to share the Light with them. This song reminds us that those who would seek to deceive us and have us believe that everything is fine are deceived themselves. But we are called to make the Truth known. How can we ever find the compassion to share this Message if we allow our hearts to be hard?For those of us who have been called to a live a life of prolonged singleness this song may strike two chords in ones heart. On one hand, this is an expression of the happiness a future bride feels on the night that her beloved proposes. On the other hand, this is an expression of the joy a person has when he/she decides to live for Love. In essence, he/she has been made a member of the True Bride.
Of course, when it comes to natural marriage, we must make certain that we wish to be married for the right reasons. Fear of loneliness is not the best motivation. In most situations, it is good to maintain hope for marriage. If it remains a desire in ones heart chances are it is a part of the Design. At the same time, simply believing that marriage is meant is seldom enough to combat loneliness. Being reminded that as Believers we've called into Relationship is the true cure for loneliness. There is encouragement to never settle or enter into unhealthy romances in order to avoid being alone. There is joy is recognizing that True Love has already come to live in our hearts well before we are introduced to our future lovers.

Mel Bay - The Most Incredible Jazz Music Guitar Player Ever!

Jazz guitar player Mel Bay was born on February 25, 1913 in the small Ozark Mountain town of Bunker, Missouri. He bought a Sears guitar at the age of 13 and several weeks later played his first "gig." He recalled playing right up until his fingers were raw! Mel took up the tenor banjo shortly thereafter and continued to master both instruments. Throughout his teen years Mel played with a wild assortment of bands and characters in rural Missouri. Perhaps no "gig" was as unusual as the job he landed with, in Mel's own words, "a snake oil salesman." This flamboyant peddler would pull his ostentatious Pierce Arrow automobile, complete with steer horns installed on the grill, into the center of a small, rural town. Mel would sit on the car and play up a storm on the tenor banjo. Soon after a crowd gathered, the peddler took over and started extolling the miracles of his "wonder elixer."
In 1933 Mel Bay moved to St. Louis and commenced his professional career. He performed with a lot of local and traveling bands. Additionally, he landed staff guitar employment on various radio stations. Mel fronted his own trio (piano, bass, guitar) and played steadily for 25 years! He was equally adept on most fretted instruments and played mandolin, uke, Hawaiian guitar, tenor and plectrum banjo professionally.
Whilst Mel was actively pursuing his playing career, he continued to tutor as many as 100 students a week. He decided to commence composing instructional books of jazz guitar tabs and jazz guitar tablatures owing to the problem encountered by guitarists at performing great sounding chord forms in rhythm sections and due to the mediocore note reading ability prevalent amongst guitar performers.
Soon after World War 2 Mel was asked to publish instructional tutorials on guitar for soldiers wanting to learn music under the GI Bill. In 1947 Mel formed his own publishing company and authored his landmark initial book titled "The Orchestral Chord System For Guitar". This book is still in print and continues to be one of the best rhythm guitar chord books available! His "Modern Guitar Method" was authored soon thereafter. For many years Mel traveled from town to town talking to guitar teachers and players and showing them his publications. At one time Mel claims to have known virtually just about every guitar teacher in America on a first name basis! The guitar and Mel Bay's publications caught on in a big way in the 1950's. Things have continued to grow ever since.
Mel also used to retail D'Angelico jazz archtop guitars. At any given time he would have 5 or 6 "lying around the house." Mel played professionally on his D'Angelico New Yorker Model but his favorite guitar was the original Mel Bay Model constructed as a present for him by John D'Angelico. This well-known guitar had all of the main features of the New Yorker but was a "cutaway" model and had a somewhat thinner neck. This same instrument has been pictured on the Mel Bay "Modern Guitar Method" for decades.
Someone once calculated that sales of guitar publications written by Mel Bay have exceeded 25 million copies. When asked, Mel usually explained that he quit counting long ago. Sales of his "Modern Guitar Method" have alone passed the 7 million mark! It is safe to say that Mel Bay is one of the pivotal figures in the world of guitar music and instructional materials in this or any other century!

Rockabilly Ain't Elevator Music!

The title of this article pretty much points out the painfully obvious! In fact, when you think about what "elevator" music is, you can take the opposite of that and you'd have a pretty good description of what rockabilly is.
Elevator music strives to be generic and nondescript. It's designed so that it doesn't offend anyone. It's safe, serene, calm, and careful. I'm not sure those four words have ever in the history of spoken or written communication appeared in the same sentence as the word rockabilly! Rockabilly is none of those and never was.
In fact, back in the early days, rockabilly music and the musicians who played it were considered dangerous, manic, brash, and careless. The music was viewed as a mental illness and a disease that was infesting the clean skin of polite society.
The rockabilly pioneers were "dangerous" and they knew it. They cultivated their "vulgar" rebel image because they knew that the more the parents hated it, the more the kids loved it.
Although the musicians involved in the music were in truth mostly decent, ordinary people just like the people in any other profession, rockabilly and rock and roll did ironically turn out to be dangerous. Dangerous for many of the musicians and others in the industry who suddenly found themselves faced with that potent combination of sudden fame and adulation and more money than they ever dreamed of.

As for the aria, it starts out with the typical exchange between lovers in which Tosca and Cavaradossi exchange expressions of affection yet after a kiss of passion; Mario makes it clear that he is rushed and asks Floria to leave him to his toil. This to Tosca's reaction who accepts Mario's request with reluctance yet does agree that it perhaps would be best if he were to be left to his duties. Tosca's words "vado, vado" (I am going) reminding me of a lady who is getting out of her lover's bed after having made love with the jealousy of one who knows that his time will no longer be hers. Tosca's eyes or those of Angela Gheorghiu, also taking on the playful charm in this scene of a child, who is being told by her father that he does not have time to play with her yet accepts his decision not in anger but with the understanding of those who are disappointed. It being a smile to decorate Angela Gheorghiu's lips as she is ever endearing in this brief moment of exquisiteness in which her face gathers even further beauty.
It is however as Tosca is about to leave that she notices the woman Cavaradossi is painting and asks with all of her suspicion "Who is that blond woman up there?". Cavaradossi seeing that Tosca's is but the ways of one who adores, answers with calm as he claims "It is Magdalena, do you like her?". Tosca at this point becomes slightly jealous as she questions Mario even further by declaring "She is too beautiful!" in what is turning out to be a perfect exchange between a tenor and a soprano in what is definitely a most dramatic role.
Mario however not wanting to quarrel simply tries to sooth Tosca's fears as he says "such a lovely compliment" with a smile of warmth. Tosca however wonders as she says "Those blue eyes I have seen them before" as if reminding her of somebody Mario knows. Mario however showing serenity claims with calm as the music suits his part and his words "there are so many like them in the world" as he tries to go back to his work of art.
It being at this point that the music centers around their dialog as Tosca stops Cavaradossi and says "aspecta" (wait) almost with the caprice of a child. Tosca suddenly violently asks if the woman in the photo is one which she knows was a former lady friend of Mario's. Mario declaring that such is not the case yet Tosca with despair insists upon certainty that he was not painting another woman. This as the melody increase in its dramatic effects with Tosca, who to me is really Angela Gheorhiu; reacting with dread that in fact all of Mario's effort might have been inspired by another woman. It almost seeming as if Tosca had discovered Mario in the act of sexuality with another woman or had seen this very act in the painting which in her imagination is taunting not only her fears but what might be reality.
Cavaradossi however seeing that Tosca is merely showing concern that she might not be the sole woman in his life, guarantees her that he has not seen the woman she is reoffering to in a long time; save when she turns up at church merely to pray and even swears to it as he claims "juro". This promise easing Tosca's fears whose worries are but of those who perhaps adore with too much passion and need to be reassured even of what they know to be true.
Tosca referring to the eyes as if they gazed upon her and with a certain jealousy or perhaps even envy mentions their beauty. Mario however is captivated by the insecurity in Tosca as he wishes to reassure her there is no other love in his life but her with words that praise not so much the beauty which is so apparent but the significance it has on to his emotions. It being Mario's voice which shows the force of a tenor with strength which does not shriek yet rises as he expresses the most tender feelings for a sentiment; he holds for a woman and how he would never wish to jeopardize it.
Tosca is moved as she hears Mario's praises with the innocence of a child who is receiving the loveliest of presents to consul and comfort her. Tosca however also realizing that Mario is well acquainted with the maneuvers of being able to find points of weakness in women that they might succumb to his affections. Tosca's words "como sai bene il arte di farte amar" (you know the art of making yourself be loved) in a way praising Mario yet also wondering if his is but a well rehearsed act which he is capable of applying with any woman he chooses. Mario however with the patience of one who adores simply humors his Tosca further in claiming "mia gelosa". This being the moment in which both cuddle with tenderness while coquette smiles put an end to all the worries which Tosca might have had concerning their romance.
This as Cavaradossi's voice soars above the harmony and though many from Alagna to Pavarotti have taken this role, I would say that it is Placido Domingo whose character and above all style of singing are ideal not only for this aria but the opera Tosca. Domingo having the power yet tenderness which does not require him to have to struggle with his voice but deliver it just right. As for myself, the opera Tosca, in fact was the first I ever saw at New York's Metropolitan Opera House yet it was with Pavarotti back in the winter of 86. I however would go on to hear Tosca performed by Placido Domingo in Central Park that very year which did allow me to see the differences between these two great tenors which included not only their vocal styles along with their personalities.
Cavaradossi repeats "mia geloso" yet wishes to be left to his work as he and Tosca express desires with their eyes though she is all too aware that he must get back to his work. Tosca however before leaving does exert a promise from Mario that he get home on time regardless of weather the woman he is painting be blond or brunette; to which Mario repeats that this he swears to as both leave the stage.
In conclusion, I would say that the aria "Mia Gelosa" is one of the most tender emotions in opera. As it is undoubtedly one of love yet there is that element which is so typical for the rest of the opera Tosca. Tosca being one of political as well as romantic intrigues that reach higher levels of intensity in acts two in three yet "Mia Gelosa" does allow us to see the sort of relationship which Tosca has with the painter; Mario Cavaradossi.
