Cheap Electric Guitars - Great To Have As A Performance Back Up

Getting cheap electric guitars is not really such a bad thing, as hopefully this short article will confirm. A few years ago my little brother used to play in a pretty decent local band. This was around the time of so-called 'Brit Pop' and some his band mates have gone on to bigger and better things. Of course, I went to see him quite a few times and being the aggressive guitarist that he was, he was forever breaking strings and dropping picks (to the point now where he tends to use only finger techniques). When you get more money you will be able to buy more equipment and employ 'roadies'; however for the vast majority of musicians breaking guitar strings and dropping picks is pretty common place in a live music setting.
So, on the basis that I have witnessed, on numerous occasions, my brother get out of these situations, maybe the following will be of some use, I hope so:
The first thing I recall was that the whole band, no matter if members changed they still acted as a team. They were well rehearsed and as such could recognise when something was not sounding right with one of the parts. This I would say was the most important element, what follows are the ways to get out of hole...
If you drop a pick, and there are no spares immediately to hand, then you need to be able to do without. Play with your fingers. I believe that wonder blues guitarist Jeff Beck dropped his pick, used his fingers and then never returned to using one. This could be myth, but it is not beyond the realms of possibility.
You will be able to improvise for a while, but a whole stage set will probably demand all six strings on your guitar. Therefore you are going to need to carry spares for everything. Spare strings, picks and even cables should always be carried. This is where the cheap electric guitars come into the picture, because you are likely to be using your new guitar, so take them and make sure that they are properly tuned up!
If you need to spend a little time off the stage getting things together then my brother's band used to make sure that they could all play something with any one of the other members missing, even the drummer. That way they could keep the audience interested as there is nothing worse than silence and everyone heading to the bar.
Most people will tend to snap their thinnest string so the advice here is to go up from a 9 gauge to a 10. Just that slight extra is a little sturdier. If you are a hard 'strummer,' there are other techniques that produce the same impact.
In terms of the strings you should really be looking at the type of picks you do use. If you use a metal pick that has no flexibility and you have a strong picking technique then the picks act like a carving knife on the strings which will cause more breakages as would burrs in the saddle.

Southern Gospel Music - Most Influential Artists, Past and Present

In any genre of music, there are specific individuals that are considered the pioneers or those who transcend a musical generation. Southern Gospel music is no different. With its origins deeply rooted in the early 1900's based on Christian lyrics and backed by American early music styles such as bluegrass it has its own history of transcendent artists.
Considered one of the founders of Southern Gospel music James D. Vaughan was one of the original pioneers. Born 1864 in Tennessee James was a music teacher, a composer and a songbook publisher. In 1900, he started the James D. Vaughan music publishing company and the Vaughan school of music in 1911 where many gospel performers studied in the coming years. In the year previous 1910, he pioneered the concept of selling songbooks on the road when he assembled the first professional quartet and sent them on the road. Vaughan also founded one of the very first radio stations in Tennessee in 1922 that broadcast Southern Gospel music up until 1930. In addition, he founded Vaughan phonograph records, which is the first recording company in the south. It is easy to see why Vaughan is considered the pioneer of Southern Gospel music and why he was inducted into the southern Gospel music Hall of Fame in 1997.
You cannot speak about James D. Vaughan without mentioning Charles Davis Tillman. Tillman is also considered one of the pioneers of modern Southern Gospel music. Born 1861 in Alabama as the youngest son of a Baptist preacher, Tillman has been credited with integrating African-American spirituals into traditional Christian music. As a singer and composer, he was introduced to the spiritual "The Old-Time Religion" at a very young age where he wrote his own version and exposed it to the white churchgoers and southerners to this new type of sound. In doing so this blend of music eventually became known as Southern Gospel and influenced a generation of artists such as Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly. Tillman went on to write dozens of songs one of which being the most popular "Life's Railway to Heaven" that influenced generations. Tillman has been memorialized at the southern Gospel music Hall of Fame and the Gospel music Hall of Fame.
Carrying on the Southern music legacy are the Blackwood Brothers. Formed in 1934 with brothers Roy Blackwood, Doyle Blackwood, James Blackwood, and R.W Blackwood began singing together as a quartet. By 1940, they were already on the road selling songbooks and singing on the radio in Iowa. The quartet over the years has had many lineup changes of family members and non-family members but overall has been influential in the Southern Gospel music business for 76 years. They inspired generations of quartets that followed them such as the Kingsmen Quartet, the Statesmen Quartet and the Oak Ridge boys.
Some of the most influential Southern artists of modern day have over the years been comprised of such artists as Elvis Presley, the Oak Ridge boys to some of today's artists like Ernie Hasse & the signature sound. Over the many generations, there have been hundreds of Southern artists responsible for paving the way for the next generation and to mention some would mean missing more. The previously mentioned pioneers of the ones that started it all and they are legacy will inspire future artists as well.

Guitar Adjustment (Get All The Right Advice In One Spot)

Guitar Adjustment Made Easy
In this article we will be going over the best ways to make guitar adjustments. Guitar adjustment is an important part of playing guitar. "It is kind of like the untold secret." If your guitar adjustment is not correct you will have a hard time playing and learning guitar comfortably. In fact it will actually set off the sound pitch of your guitar.
Guitar adjustment is a very important part of playing guitar. Do Not Over Look It!
All guitar adjustment instructions should be done in the order of which they are laid out on this page. If guitar adjustment is done in any other order you may spend a lot of time repeating earlier steps.
Guitar adjustment takes time so please do not get in a hurry when doing these guitar adjustments.
So let's get down to it. This guitar adjustment article will cover Fret board conditioning, Bridge Adjustment, Truss rod adjustment, Pick up adjustment, Intonation and Fret Buzz.
Guitar Adjustment - Fret Board Conditioning
How do you know if your fret board needs to be conditioned? If your frets are not shiny, or if you see an oil build up happening, or discoloring on the wood itself it is time to clean and condition your fret board.
You will need to find a guitar friendly fret board conditioner. There is one guitar conditioner that many guitar players use, called Guitar Honey by Gerlitz. Conditioning the fret board can have a great impact on your guitar. It will make it look and feel better as well as make it easier for you to move around on the neck of the guitar.
Step 1. Remove your guitar strings.
Step 2. Apply Your Favorite Fret board conditioner.
Step 3. Wipe down the fret board making sure to go the same direction as the frets on the fret board and re-apply if necessary. You may want to use a soft tooth-brush for the tight spots by the frets.
Step 4. Install new strings or use rubbing alcohol to clean the strings.
Step 5. Install strings and tune.
Do Not use rubbing alcohol on the fret board of your guitar it will take the finish off over time.
Guitar Adjustment - Bridge Adjustment
How do you know if your bridge height adjustment is wrong? If it is hard for you to push down on the string and change notes your guitar bridge maybe out of adjustment. Or if the strings buzz no matter what area you play in.
Please keep in mind that you will want to use the measurement below only to get the adjustment close. You will want to adjust your bridge to fit your playing style and comfort.
To do this you will need to get a gaping tool that measures 3/64 of an inch and an appropriate Allen wrench.
Step1. Starting at the high E string and working your way up to the low E string. Measure this gap at the 12th fret open string. If the gap is to high loosen or drop the highest of your bridge. If the height is to low you will want to tighten or raise the bridge using the adjustment screws.
Step 2. Once You get the adjustments right with the gaping tool you will want to re-tune your guitar and try it out. If it seems like the strings are still to high then you can adjust them to suit your playing style.
Guitar Adjustment - Truss Rod Adjustment
What is a truss rod? If you look up by the head of your guitar right in front of the string nut there is a hole with a bolt in it. Note: Some guitars truss rod adjustment are located on the other end of the neck by the pickups. To make guitar adjustment to the truss rod if it is located on the pick up side of the neck you will need to remove the pick guard on most guitars.
Why Does your guitar Have A Truss Rod? The truss rod on your guitar is their to adjust the bow or Ark in the neck. Your guitar neck should never be completely flat unless your playing with nylon strings. You want your guitar neck to have a little bit of a bow in it to allow for string clearance.
Step 1a. So how do you know if the truss rod on your guitar is out of adjustment? You should be able to hold your finger on the 6th fret of the low E string and play the note without any buzzing sound. If it buzzes this is an indicator that your truss rod is most likely to tight.
Step 1b. Another Great way to test if the truss rod on your guitar needs adjustment is to hold your left hand index finger on the 1st fret of the low E string and your right hand pinky on the highest fret of the neck. Then tap on the 12th fret with the index finger of your right hand. If you hear a buzzing sound that most likely means that the truss rod is to lose.
Ok, so at this point we have a good idea of what the truss rod and neck are doing. So now if your neck is fine you are done. But if either one of the steps above resulted in a buzzing sound then it is time to get the tools out and do some adjusting.
Step 2. tools you may need will include a small Philips screw driver "To remove the truss rod cover" if there is one. An Allen wrench "For fender guitars there are 2 common sizes 3/16 And 3/32 and for Gibson it will be a 5/16.
If the Truss rod adjustment is at the top of the neck and has a cove the first thing to do is remove the cover. Then insert the Allen wrench and either tighten or loosen.
Step 3. When you put your finger on the six fret it buzzed then you would want to loosen it (counter-clockwise). If the guitar made a buzzing sound when you put your finger on the first and last fret then tapped the 12th fret, then the truss rod is to loose. You will need to tighten it (clockwise).
Please always remember you only want to turn the Allen wrench 1/8 of a turn each time. Then re-check the adjustment by using the steps above (Step 1b.).
Step 4. So how do you know if it is right? You should be able to put your index finger on the 1st fret of the E string and your other index finger on the highest fret on the E string. Now you will want to look at the gap or distance between the string and the metal fret at the 6th fret. There you want to see a small gap about 1/64 of a inch or less. You may need to adjust and check several times.
If truss rod does not move Take it to the pros and have them free it up for you.
If you are having problems with the adjustment or it seems like it is so close but you can get it right on you will be better off letting the guitar sit over night and allow the neck to acclimate, then give it another try.
Keep in mind it does take time to get things adjusted right.
Guitar Adjustment - Pickup Adjustment
After you make all the necessary guitar adjustments above you will need to check that your pickups are still adjusted right. If your pickups are to far away from the strings you will not get a very powerful sound. Although if your pickups are to close to the string the magnetic field from the pickups will give off a distorted sound and destroy sustain.
To make these adjustments you will need to hold the string down on the highest fret and check the clearance between the string and the pickup.
For Fender Guitars Adjustment follow the gaping table below.
Pickup Height
Texas specials
Bass side: 8/64"
Treble Side: 6/64"
Vintage Style
Bass Side: 6/64"
Treble Side: 5/64"
Amer/Mex Std
Bass Side: 5/64"
Treble Side: 4/64"
Lace Sensors: As close as desired, allowing for string vibration
For Gibson Guitar Adjustment follow the gaping table below.
Neck Pickup: 3/32" on bass and treble side
Bridge Pickup: 1/16" on bass and treble side
You will want to use a gaping tool to get this close and then adjust it to your personal playing style. If there is too much low end when you strum a chord then you will need to lower the pick up on the top or low E string side. If there is too much treble then you will need to do the same on the bottom end of the guitar or the high e string side.
The guitar adjustment above can be done with a simple Philips screw driver in most cases.
Guitar Adjustment - Intonation
What is intonation? Is making sure that the guitar is in tune with its self. If you tune your guitar perfect and then play a chord it should still sound in tune. But if it sounds like it is out of tune or some of the notes sound sharp or flat then you know you have an intonation adjustment problem.
Tools needed to adjust intonation. Guitar Tuner and screw driver or what ever tool is used for your guitar.
Step 1. Play a harmonic note at the 12th fret on the e-string and check it on the tuner. Then you should be able to play the note of the 12 fret and check it on the tuner. If these two notes show the same on the tuner then the intonation is correct.
If one is higher or lower than the other on the tuner then you will need to make an adjustment.
Step 2. Tune the string using the harmonic.
Step 3. Play the fretted note now and check it on the tune if the fretted note is higher or sharp then you will need to tighten or bring the saddle back away from the pickup. Make only very small adjustment each time.
Step 4. If fretted note is lower you will need to loosen or bring the saddle adjustment toward the pickups. Make only very small adjustments each time.
Step 5. Re-tune open string then repeat step 2 -4.
Step 6. Make sure harmonic note is the same pitch as fretted note, them move on to the next string.
When you are done with intonation guitar adjustment your guitar should sound a lot better. You will want to check what you just did by playing a full chord like E major or G major. If guitar sounds good then you are done if not you will have to keep working with it to get it right.
Just remember that guitar adjustments like this are very important and take time. So please do not get in a hurry when making your guitar adjustments.
Guitar Adjustment - Tips
When making any of the guitar adjustment above always work in a well-lit area and Use the correct tools.
Also be sure that you take your time on the guitar adjustment steps above. If you don't it could result in damage to your guitar. (Such as scratches or broken strings)
Best of luck and have fun playing and I will see you in the next article.

Things to Take Note Of When Buying Sonic Producer

Finding a good and cheap solution for computer generated music is rather difficult. Hundreds of software are available, some of which are even available free of cost to the enthusiasts. Sonic Producer claims to stand out in this niche by providing a solid platform for all the music producing needs of a small group. The solution provides an easy to use interface which can be used to make melodious beats to go with the rest of the symphony. I will review the important characteristics of this platform outlining the advantages of such a system and the disadvantages associated.
I have used Sonic Producer for a couple of months now as a reviewer for an online music magazine. I was pointed to it by a fellow editor and I thought to give it a whirl and give my opinion on the system. The most striking feature of the system is the ability to quickly generate beats using presets available through the interface. The member's area comes bundled with a lot of resources for learning how to make music, understand what production is all about and judging which beat is truly outstanding and which are just bad.
The site has a nice collection of video tutorials which can help you to learn how to play drums and guitar. Starting at the very beginning, the instruments are explained in details and how they behave under different touches. Most of the emulated instruments that come with the package are capable of producing good quality electronic music. Some expansive keyboards and drums are provided with the sequencers and equalizers.
I would recommend that they redo the videos from scratch. Although the audio quality is excellent in these videos they are obviously not recorded by professionals and I sometimes felt at a loss in following what they were trying to show. Being in business for more than a couple of years now, they still have not installed phone support and rely on the more mundane methods of emailing and forum support which can take time and usually left unanswered for days. In the meantime I was able to find the answers elsewhere. The web site interface needs a facelift as it looks bland compared to some of the competitors of Sonic Producer.
Launching a good platform demands that the people running the show makes support available at all times. Lacking severely in this department the website does offer an interesting mix of tools and resources for anyone who wants to learn to produce music using the old method of self study. The other factor is cost which is at the low ends of such online solutions so that may be the deciding f actor for most of the people.

Factors To Consider When Buying Music Producer Pro

Learning to produce music is expensive. It takes a lot of effort for adults who are doing jobs to make time to go to a school or arts college to attend classes. Distance learning facilities come in handy in these situations. I will be reviewing a course offered by Music Producer Pro which can help you to learn how to produce music and gives the necessary tools to generate the ideas into melodious tunes.
The course includes various programs to help learn and make music and a lot of knowledge base for education to supplement the user. There are video lessons which show how to play drums effectively to produce the background beats which are so important in any good composition. These lessons are well made by professional player and take the user on a step by step approach to learning and achieving the skills.
The instruments which are currently focused on are guitars, bass, drums, guitars and piano. These instruments are emulated using software resources in Music Producer Pro. This allows a single person to make a good composition from anywhere and there is no need to rent a studio to pay costly fees. It does not mean that the solution is comparable to one. Of course with the real studio and artist, a musician can make much more excellent themes but the approach here is for people who cannot afford such costly setups.
The course comes with a lot of self study guides to be followed for education. There are also audio lessons detailing the use and care of physical instruments which you may own. Tips and tricks on how to maximize their usage. Instructions on promoting music and production quirks for managers are invaluable. There is an online beat maker available to members to make low quality beats quickly and without any costs involved. These beats can then be downloaded for local playing as often as needed.
There is always a problem with online courses. The inability to contact an instructor and ask questions makes distance learning difficult. This course does not provide or guarantee any interaction with instructors so the user has to make use of the forums to ask for advice if something requires explanation. The numerous forums across the web do help but sometimes that is not enough. If a serious career path in music is what you are looking for, then you should probably enroll in a program with a good institution rather than opting for distance learning courses like Music Producer Pro.

How to EQ Vocals

Here are some tips on how to successfully EQ vocals:
1. Kill the excess low end
During mixing, the excess low end of everything except for the bass and the kick should be rolled off. This is because too much low end makes vocals sound "thick" and muffled.
The thickness is caused by the fact that during recording, the artist is too close to the microphone. The shorter the distance of the sound source from the recording microphone, the more the bass response of the microphone
The use of a high-pass filter to remove the unwanted low end will make the vocals sound better.
2. Remove problem areas
EQ is best used as a tool to subtract rather than to add. This helps give the EQ a sound that is more natural. EQ cuts are subtle and not as easily detected as an EQ boost. Phasing problems are normally caused by boosting EQ.
A rule of thumb is that anything that is below 140 Hertz should be rolled-off. Should the vocals seem to have a nasal quality then, anything between 2Kz to 5Kz can be cut. Should the vocals seem to sound boxy, then the cut needs to be given to anything between 250Hz to 350Hz. Any vocals that sound 'boomy' need to have anything between 400 to 500 Hz cut. Any boosting should be done for the high-end, maybe around 12 Khz. So, if you have managed to buy beats online, make sure you check it out to see where you may need to cut. Sites like billboardexec.com have a wide variety of beats you can purchase or lease.
3. It is best to EQ before any compression.
The thing about compression is that it tends to make the parts that are quiet louder and the parts that are louder, quieter. This makes it important that any EQ be done before compression as frequencies will get boosted once compression happens.
Low frequencies are full of energy and all that energy will trigger the compressor at levels further than may be desired. That will only cause excess compression.
Rolling off the frequencies before compression will make the compressor behave naturally. This is also important if you buy beats that you use.
There are two special considerations when it comes to vocals and they are sibilance and popping. Those exaggerated high-frequency sounds that are more prominent on the letters "f" and "s," is sibilance. Though sibilance can be minimized during tracking, EQ can make it serious. Sibilance should be handled with a de-esser that has a special setting. Popping sounds should be taken cared of entirely during the tracking. However, if it is too late, a combination of EQ with a high pass filter, volume automation, and compression to solve the problem.

Beatles Used Rockabilly To Become The Successors To The King's Throne

No one argues that Elvis remains the King of Rock and Roll. But there should also be no argument that sometime around the mid 1960s the King stepped down from actively presiding over the throne. As Elvis got bogged down in a series of increasingly meaningless movies and their often meaningless soundtracks, other acts were banging on the castle gates demanding their shot at rock and roll royalty. Of course, it was the Beatles who ascended and ruled the rock and roll kingdom for the remainder of the 1960s. But the Beatles didn't make it to their lofty heights without help from rockabilly music and a great debt owed to the King!
The Beatles were just one of hundreds of second-generation rock bands that drew heavily upon the influence of the rockabilly greats that they'd listened to while growing up in the 1950s. George Harrison in particular was influenced to a huge extent by the guitar playing of Carl Perkins and others. Listen to the solos in those early Beatles songs and you'll hear many of Perkins' licks throughout. Even the Beatles choice of guitars was rockabilly influenced as they tended to use hollow-bodied instruments that evoked the memory of the hollow-bodied guitars that Eddie Cochran, Scotty Moore, and many other rockabilly guitarists favored.
The Fab Four included countless rockabilly and early rock and roll numbers in their live stage shows, particularly before they achieved their massive fame. And several rockabilly tunes made it onto some of their early albums. For instance on the American release, Beatles For Sale, the band included two Carl Perkins rockabilly tunes and in both cases they stayed very true to the original rockabilly presentation of the songs. "Honey Don't" was the B side to Perkins' seminal Sum Records release "Blue Suede Shoes" and the Beatles do a very authentic version of it on the album. The other Perkins song on Beatles For Sale, "Everybody's Tryin' to be my Baby" is a rollicking romp in the classic Perkins tongue-in-cheek style and the Beatles did it up right.
A third Perkins song recorded during the same sessions, "Matchbox," wasn't included on the record but has become a Beatles classic nonetheless. In fact, as a nod to their respect for Carl Perkins, The Beatles recorded more songs written by him than by any other artist (other than themselves.)
The Beatles knew good music when they heard it. They tapped into the joy and energy of rockabilly to craft their own unique style and the rockabilly influence stayed with them throughout their careers. McCartney is still known to throw a rockabilly tune or two into his live shows and Ringo's always good for a hot version of "Honey Don't."
The King never gave up his crown and just because these new Brits hit the scene doesn't mean Elvis just went away. He was still seeing success and came back strong in a 1968 television special. He was and always will be the King. And even though he stepped down from the throne to let the Beatles rule for a while, the "lads from Liverpool" knew their rock and roll heritage. They knew the role that rockabilly had played in their formative years and rather than shy away from it or try to hide it, they embraced it and let it become a major part of the new revolution they were building.

Gilbert O'Sullivan Lyrics - The Most Melancholy Of Them All

Born Raymond O'Sullivan in Waterford, Eire in December 1946, Gilbert O'Sullivan became one of the leading singer songwriters of the early seventies, under the stern guidance of Tom Jones' manager Gordon Mills - the man he was to successfully sue in later years, in a major dispute over Mills' record company's royalty payments.
Gilbert O'Sullivan has been largely ignored by most pop music critics; his early image perhaps alienating a sizable portion of them with its contrived, down-at-heel urchin look. It didn't get much better when he soon decided to adopt preppy, American college boy garb with a garish jumper bearing the large letter "G" on the front - not a fashion statement that has stood the test of time.
What has stood the test of time in my view is the quality of some of his songwriting, along with the clean and natural vocal style he employed. Whilst he regularly managed to construct and carry a strong melody, it is the lyrics to some of his early work that I find fascinating.
His first major hit in 1970, Nothing Rhymed, set the tone for much of his writing over the next couple of years. Resolutely melancholic, there seemed to be a hint of Charlie Chaplin-like pathos lurking around every line:
'When I'm drinking my Bonaparte shandy, eating more than enough apple pies
Would I stare at my screen and see real human beings, starve to death right in front of my eyes?'
This is surpassed by the lyrics to the song that broke him internationally, Alone Again (Naturally). The record was a number one chart hit in the US, Canada and Japan and reached number three in the UK. It can be conservatively described as resolutely downbeat. Even the ubiquitous Steven Morrissey from The Smiths might struggle to articulate such despair
'And at sixty-five years old - my mother, God rest her soul,
Couldn't understand why the only man she had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart so badly broken - despite encouragement from me, no words were ever spoken
And when she passed away, I cried and cried all day - alone again, naturally'
Over the next couple of years, O'Sullivan seemed content to flourish at the more throwaway end of the pop spectrum, with such lightweight hits as Matrimony, Ooo-Wakka-Doo-Wakka-Day and Get Down, light years from the harsh depictions of reality embedded in his earlier work. Alone Again (Naturally) is, to me, the most melancholy of all Gilbert O'Sullivan lyrics, and his finest pop moment.
As a postscript, there's a new artist I've discovered called James Henry, whose style is reminiscent in some ways to that of Gilbert O'Sullivan. Lyrics are paramount to James - checkout his song, Saturday Morning, which you can download below for free. The guy has serious potential - as long as he avoids that cloth cap and short trousers.

Confused By Guitar Effects - What Is the Difference?

Since Guitar Effects Pedals are so abundant now, how do you know what to use for your next gig! What is the difference between the flanger and the phase shifter and the Tremolo.
Guitar Effects Pedals are difficult to categorize due to the multitude of sounds. In this article I will be discussing pedals that affect your pitch and frequency. These pedals include the following types: Chorus, Flanger, Phase Shifter, Pitch Shifter and harmonizer, ring modulator, Tremolo, and Vibrato. I'll focus on a few of these.
Chorus Effect: If you have ever heard a choir sing or an orchestra play then this is what chorus effects are like. The only difference is in the timbre and pitch. A chorus effect adds vibrato to part of the signals.
Types of Chorus Effects include: Dunlop Uni-Vibe stereo chorus, Erockson Chorus Pedal, BOSS Chorus Ensemble, Visual Sound Liquid Chorus, Dunlop MXR stereo chorus pedal, MXR Micro Chorus pedal.
Flanger Effect: Flanging is produced by 2 identical sounds which are mixed together and 1 is delayed. Some describe it as a jet plane sound. The what is now called Flanging sound was in use for more than 20 years before the first portable stompbox was made to be used by guitarists.
Types of Flanger Effects Pedals include: Dunlop MXR Flanger, Dunlop MXR Micro Flanger, Erockson Flanger, Boss Flanger
Phase Shifter: Filters a signal causing peaks and troughs in it's frequency. Phase shifters are similar to flangers but they have a more out of this world type sound.
Types of Phase Shifter Effects include: Pigtronix Envelope phaser pedal, Garagetone Oil Can Phaser Pedal, BOSS Phase Shifter, BBE Soul Vibe, Electro-harmonix small tone phaser shifter, Erockson Phaser pedal, MXR phase 90 and phase 100
Pitch Shifter: Does exactly what it says. It changes the pitch. It can raise a note or lower a note to a different pitch that you choose.

Would the Hindi Singers of the Golden Age Have Made the Cut Today?

How would our great old singers have fared today?
After a number of years of not having subscriptions any Hindi Channels, we very recently got our own "Zee TV" subscription. My lack of knowledge about all things "modern" in the film world must have been seen by a number of my observant readers -- and now you know how I zealously guarded my ignorance over all these years. While virtually all my friends had some or the other Hindi channel playing on their TVs when we would go visiting, I stayed away.
With this almost Rip-van-Winkle-esque backdrop, picture me sitting comfortably in front of my TV, and switching channels to my newly acquired Z TV. As luck would have it, there was "Sa Re Ga Ma Pa - Ek Main aur Ek Tu" playing. Aha! A chance to watch young talented men and women sing. I perked up in my seat. Suffering through numerous C grade ads touting Ajmeri baba, I sat through the entire program. Well, imagine my total surprise when I heard of the stupendous amounts of prize money and contracts that awaited the winner of the contest! 50 Lakhs! Boy, had things changed! And somewhere through that program, I found my thoughts drifting, even as I was listening to these very talented young people do their stuff. Replace this with any other talent shows such as Indian Idol, and my point would still stand.
This was no longer the old "Sa Re Ga Ma" I remember seeing before I left the shores of India. Then, it was all about the singing, the quality of the voice, the training. Now, it is all that AND the ability to present, to sing AND dance, to be an "entertainer" not just a singer. Perhaps the bar has been raised in some ways, but perhaps it has been lowered in certain others. Then, of course, there is this ludicrous and ubiquitous SMS messaging which determines the winner, and not the panel of judges, who, at least supposedly, are there because of their knowledge and experience. Supposedly democracy at work, where masses-with-cellphones-who-vote decide whether a singer (umm.. performer) makes the cut or not.
I was thinking about the old brigade of our singing greats and wondering how they would have done in today's context. Imagine a young Lata Mangeshkar, singing with her same celestial voice, but not getting SMS messages from the masses because she just stood there and didn't dance on the stage with a merry smile on her face. (Not to mention the fact that Maharashtrians wouldn't be bothered with sending SMS messages to get her selected, but let that pass.)
Manna De, of the golden, classically precise voice -- even if he had sung with his usual warm perfection, would he have gotten votes? Face it, while he sings fantastically, he never was known for his ability to dance on the stage.
Mohammed Rafi -- the smile would be just as gentle to match his peerless voice, but "Aapne aaj achha performance diya, lekin aapne stage ka upyog theek tarah se nahi kiya" would have been the only comment, chiding him on his inadequate use of the stage.
Same with Talat Mehmood -- great looks (after all he did come into films as an actor, and has actually acted in Sone ki Chidiya alongside Nutan), but would the audience be able to stomach his sensitive voice when they were looking for "masti bhare gaane"?
Perhaps the survivors from the old guard would have been Asha Bhosale and Kishore Kumar. Ashaji has an amazing stage presence, and has the gumption to pull off the requirements, whatever it took. Kishore Kumar always was an over-the-top performer, and could sing and dance with the best of them. And for good measure, he would also pull off wisecracks and jokes.
Runa Laila comes to mind as one who might have passed muster even in today's world. A crystal clear voice, a fantastic stage presence, the ability to "move" with her own music naturally, and a sultry sensuous look. (Remember we are talking about when they were YOUNG.)
Mukesh -- again great looks and a winning smile (I thought he looked better than Raj Kapoor in the song Chhotisi yeh zindagani re from the movie Aah which was picturised on him), but would he have made the cut with the SMS generation? Not sure.
All the new generation of superbly talented young people have to have that extra presentation ability, if they have any hopes of making it in this industry. And that means, by its very nature, that we must be missing some Latas, some Mohammed Rafis, some Talats and some Manna Des.
Well -- our loss. But life goes marching on. And what we don't know doesn't bother us. Who knows, there might have been someone (dare I suggest?) better than Lata and Mohammed Rafi, who we simply never heard, and hence we just didn't know any better.
I, for one, would have been the poorer had I gone through life without hearing a Rafi or Lata just because people who understand talent didn't watch that particular channel, or didn't have a cell phone handy, or were unable or unwilling to SMS their choices.

Best Tinie Tempah Lyrics

Since his stunning breakthrough single 'Pass Out' UK Rap star Tinie Tempah has been dominating the headlines and airwaves. Over the past few weeks I have been listening to his debut album 'Disc-Overy' in an attempt to find out more about the man behind the music, what he stands for, the messages he conveys and what are the best Tinie Tempah lyrics.
So let's start with 'Pass Out' obvious to say the track isn't really about much, "20 light bulbs around my table and my dresser ClC Kompressor, just in case that don't impress her" it's fairly light hearted and meaningless, but the track is a straight up dancefloor 'banger' and more about the vibe, delivery and production. The same can be said for his follow up single 'Frisky' which largely followed the same formula with a drum 'n' bass section at the end.
Tinie's 3rd single "Written In The Stars" (feat Erc Turner) revealed a different side to the rapper, he speaks from the heart about his personal struggles and strife whilst chasing a dream. "I needed a break for a sec I even gave up believing and praying I even done illegal stuff and was leaded astray they say money is the root to the evilest ways but have you ever been so hungry that it keeps you awake" His usual tight and rhythmic flow shines through but the fact that this track actually has some meaning and is delivered with real conviction made it stand out for me
Another track with a great concept is 'Snap' - it begins with "the ones we love, the ones we've lost, there's some we frame and there's some we crop" Tinie talks about memories of his father reminisces about his experiences at school. The concept is great and the track could have been one of the strongest on the album, but it feels as though he held back from really drawing the listener in and telling people about his past. You get the feeling that if the Eminem's or Ghostface Killah's of this world would have made this track, the content and thought behind it would have been a lot stronger.
All in all, although there are many great tracks on 'Disc-Overy' I do not feel that the album really reveals anything about Tinie Tempah that we don't already know. The album is more of a collection of singles and less about the content, which makes sense as it is his debut album and the aim was obviously to have a handful of radio ready tracks to assault the charts with, which he did of course succeeded in doing. The guy is technically a great rapper with a very unique delivery, I just hope with his follow up album there is more depth and personality in there and lyrics that people relate to. Balancing between appealing to the mainstream and incorporating real substance into tracks is a tall order for any artist, and few manage to achieve it fully.

My All Time Favourite 10cc Songs

I first came across 10cc around 1973, not long after they'd had their first UK number one with the song Rubber Bullets. I thought they were American, judging by the lead vocalist's falsetto on that memorable hit, but soon discovered they were from Manchester in the north of England. I was re-acquainted with them when they were the subject of an ITV Schools Programme in 1974, when the recording session for the song The Dean And I was filmed.
A couple of years and albums later, I was a paid up fan and terribly saddened to hear of their split in 1976, soon after the release of How Dare You. Although they continued with two original members, Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart, that intangible 10cc chemistry seemed to have evaporated once Kevin Godley and Lol Crème had committed themselves long-term to other ventures, including directing pop videos.
It is from these first four albums, boasting the classic 10cc line up, that I've selected my all time favourite 10cc songs.
*Silly Love - from the album Sheet Music, released in 1974, the single climbing to No. 24 in the UK. I remember hearing this song on BBC Radio 1, on one of the first mornings I had to leave to get a bus to my new secondary school. From then on, hearing the record's opening bars takes me right back to sitting on that bus, heading into the unknown. I often wondered if the lyric had been inspired by the BBC TV comedy Monty Python's Flying Circus?
*I'm Not In Love - from the album The Original Soundtrack, released in 1975. A multi-layered production with a gorgeous melody and an interesting spoken word section in the middle, delivered by the Strawberry Studios receptionist, it became a worldwide hit and a pop standard.
*Life Is A Minestrone - from side 2 of the album The Original Soundtrack, the song's title was allegedly part of some throwaway banter from a radio talk show. The band's lyrical sense of humour was much in evidence, in lines such as 'I'm leaning on the tower of Pisa; had an eyeful of the tower in France...'
*I'm Mandy Fly Me - from the 1976 album How Dare You. Another beautiful melody that turned into an unsuspecting journey. Almost prog rock in its approach, its inventiveness just about stays within the pop song format. A tour de force, reaching number 6 in the UK singles chart in April 1976.
Should you be a fan of these 10cc songs, I'm certain you'll soon become a fan of a new performer, also hailing from the north of England, called James Henry. You can download an excellent song of his, Saturday Morning, for nothing by clicking the link below. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

To Make Beats Online You Must Know Your History

If your grew up in the 90's like I did then you will know that back then the only way you could make music which was with some expensive equipment. Back then people would have studios in the weirdest of weird places that would keep up the neighbors all night because of all the loud beats.
People had to hire a band to make their instrumentals and just maybe you got luck if your uncle Larry knew how to play a guitar or piano which could save you a couple of dollars. In those days it was tough for musician but it did teach us one important thing. It allowed the real producers and musician to really hold their skills and break out into the world because there was less competition.
It actually took lots of money to hire a producer that will put together beats and sound tracks that will wow the crowd. People really had to be great at what they did and those who didn't harness the skills then they just couldn't compete in the music world.
Today Is Different
Since the rise of the internet in the late 90's which allowed us to get online and explore new places and software. The music industry has suffered extremely because of the cd burner. Not only was people were able to download and burn music, now people are able to become mega music producer from the confers of their own homes.
The internet has allowed people to break into the industry without any talent because now you can just go online and start making music just as if you were one of the pros. Basically if you want to become a music producer and make beats for a living, then all you will have to do is get online and find a software that will do basically all the work for you.
Many sites offer you ways to make music online just by you paying a monthly fee for using their service. There's no need to have music equipment these days when you can just start a software up and start making music. So this holds the question is making music online the future or not.
Music has evolve into something that's a billion dollar industry each year and everyone's trying to get their piece of the pie. DJ's have even changed the way they get their music when doing social events.
A perfect example is that a lot of DJ's have stop using Cd's these days. They are mainly converting to using the net to play and make their music. So basically everything they do is at their finger tips, and the smart people are making the effort to make music online versus buying expensive equipment.

On The Look Out For Hot New Soul Divas!

There have been many 'new big things' promised in the world of pop and soul, but few really live up to the old classic divas, the ones who used to rule the smoky clubs of New Orleans and used their dusky voice and powerful personalities to create a name for themselves in immortality. There are too many to mention here, but if you are into soul, then you will already have a favourite.
Cast your mind back to the first time that you heard that soul or rock singer who really captured your ear; the needle hit the groove and the band began to play, with the delicate croon of bluesy soul riding over the music beneath. Wouldn't it be great if we had them now, rather than the terrible pop stars that are force fed into our daily diet of music through the radio and TV?
What seems to be lacking in today's music scene are true originals, singers that channel the spirits of their heroines in their singing and songwriting style. However, they are out there; you just have to search for them. If you trawl MySpace and Facebook music pages, then you are sure to stumble upon true talents who are constantly uploading their songs for the world to hear.
There's no doubt that the singers are out there, it just means that you have to look a little harder for them; unfortunately it doesn't require drinking down at the blues bars in New Orleans and waiting for a gorgeous singer to take the stage. Now you have to sit at you computer and wait for the next big thing to come through your stereo speakers...you can still make it fun and imagine that you were there in the heart of it though!
So tonight, or whenever it is that you have a free couple of hours, browse through the internet and see what today's soul divas are up to. You may actually be surprised at what you discover and even find a new favourite for your online record collection. It may not sound as fun as stepping into a smoky bar, but what with the smoking ban, most of the blues bars have lost that character anyway! We can all discover our new favourite singer and then, with enough support, get them to play in our local concert hall to relive the old days!

Rockabilly Sex Appeal Helped Propel Early Careers And Enrage Parents

Nobody had ever seen anything quite like Elvis Presley before when he started appearing on stages and live television broadcasts in the mid 1950s. Some had seen the rhythm and blues performers that Elvis in large part modeled himself after, but no one had seen a white performer behave "that way." Elvis' music was exciting and his stage presence was equally so. He had strong sex appeal and he knew how to use it. And he wasn't alone. Sex appeal was a big part of the equation for many rockabilly stars. And it was a big part of the reason why parents and other "responsible" adults hated the music!
By today's standards, the Elvis of 1955 looks fairly tame. But back then, he hit the scene with a raw sensuality that seemed at the same time both dangerous and innocent. It was like he wasn't necessarily trying to act that way; it was just the way he was, and how could he help it? Off stage he was very quiet and polite--a real nice boy. But on stage, he turned into a pulsating, suggestive, dangerous "cretin" who many thought should be banned and kept away from the kids. But it was Elvis' ground-breaking sensuality that attracted girls and boys alike: The girls wanted to be with Elvis and the boys wanted to be Elvis!
But Elvis didn't hold the exclusive market on this unique sensuality for long. Many other musicians recognized a successful formula when they saw and heard one and they took off in many different directions from the starting point that Elvis established. Ricky Nelson expertly played the role of pretty-boy teen idol as he started cranking out rockabilly hits. Eddie Cochran's natural good looks and undeniable charisma made many think that he would soon rival Elvis. Of course, his early death in a car crash made it impossible to ever know for sure.
Gene Vincent played a harder-edged bad boy with a greaser image. Vincent didn't pretend that there was anything "nice" about him. He'd had a few rough blows in life--being permanently crippled in a motorcycle accident which nearly cost him his leg--and you could see the roughness in his on-stage presence.
The ladies were getting into the act too. Wanda Jackson was as close to a female Elvis as there ever was. In the same way that Elvis seemed to innocently use his sensuality, Jackson broke the mold for performing women. She broke away from the cowgirl outfits that women were wearing on stage at the time and began to appear on stage in tight pencil skirts and high heels. She cut a stunning figure on stage and she knew it. But she was also classy and forever changed the way female rock and roll and country performers approached being on stage.
Sparkle Moore developed a presence that was more the female Gene Vincent than Elvis. She appeared on stage in "greaser" cloths complete with jeans and leather jacket and a female version of the pompadour haircut that was so popular with the men. In fact, her hair was not unlike the haircut Stray Cat Brian Setzer sported during the band's early 1980s run to the top.
Each of these performers--and many others--rewrote the book on stage presence. They defined the look and tone of early rock and roll performers. Parents and establishment adults were shocked at such "lewd" behavior and they hated these people and the music they made. This, of course, only elevated their place in the hearts and minds of teenagers all that much more!

Electronic Keyboards - Electronica Revival Give New Impetus to The Market

As electronic music continues to surge in popularity with a revival of the sounds of the eighties and nineties from a plethora of new bands and production teams, the music industry is responding by launching new ranges of electronic keyboards from big names in the music industry. Companies like Roland, Korg and Yamaha are applying advances in technology to deliver a whole range of synthesized vintage and retro sounds in high quality instruments with organic playability, stable electronics and USB and audio interfaces.
Roland's Jupiter 80 synthesizer is a perfect example of this latest phenomenon. With a 76-note, semi-weighted keyboard, the Jupiter 80 offers 256 notes of polyphony with Roland's famous SuperNatural technology giving seamless note-to-note expression. The powerful sound engine feeds back on the player's technique to produce realistic sound coupled with an authentic performance. The Jupiter 80 has four on-board effects processors for great versatility plus USB connection for playing backing tracks or recording with ease. The original Jupiter was hugely popular in the Eighties and Roland know that they are onto a good thing by re-using the name for this sophisticated instrument that gives the user a retro feel backed up by Roland's latest advances in technology.
The appropriately named Korg Kronos synthesizer workstation is truly a leader in the field as it offers more than similar keyboards but at an affordable price. Korg have aimed to cover three areas with the launch of Kronos; Live, Production and Sound Design. Those using the Kronos for live performance will find a familiar program and combi layout with nine synth engines and a unique set list for compiling sounds. In production the 16-track sequencer and 16-track audio recorder together with analogue audio inputs for recording or sampling direct to the internal 300GB hard drive make the Kronos a user-friendly piece of studio kit. The aforementioned synth engines plus wave sequencing and vector synthesis put a large tick in the sound design box. Korg employed industry icons to program onboard sounds for the Kronos and it shows.
For a professional but affordable option it is hard to beat Yamaha's MOX6 and MOX8 synthesizer workstations. Internally they both offer the musician the same package. Both have a huge on-board 16-track sequencer, 226,000 note and 64 song capacity. There are over 1000 voices and over 350MB of waveforms, a vocoder and arpeggiator with over 6000 patterns available, which can be edited and enhanced with Yamaha's XA (Expanded Articulation) technology. All of which combine to form a great opportunity to recreate classic synth sounds or totally new ones. Externally the MOX6 has a 61-note semi-weighted keyboard, while the MOX8 has an 88-note fully weighted graded hammer action keyboard for an authentic piano feel. Both of the instruments are flexible and versatile, integrating with other audio sources and forming a complete package for beginners and professionals alike.
The electronic keyboard market is certainly very dynamic at present, producing product to meet demand for both the synth led electronic music revival and the newer computer-based music production market. Aside from the fact that the keyboard and synthesizer have long since played a major role in electronic acts from the Human League to the The Chemical Brothers and beyond, the keyboard now has just as important a role at the forefront of the traditional rock band as well as the electric guitar, which makes keyboard players the new rock and roll stars. Electronic keyboard manufacturers have certainly stepped up to the challenge and musicians now have access to a whole range of new and retro sounds in a range of high quality instruments. Dobro Guitar - Important Guitar Facts You Should Know About

If you like the clean sound of the steel stringed acoustic guitar then chances are you'll quickly fall in love with the classic Dobro Guitar. For those who haven't heard of this particularly unique instrument, the dobro guitar (also called the 'resonator guitar') was invented back in the 1930's by the Dopyera brothers who attempted to design an acoustic guitar that had a louder sound to it.
On a regular acoustic the level and quality of sound is determined by its body shape and the size of the hollow but on a dobro this has been replaced by a specially designed steel plate which amplifies the steel strings.
The bright metallic sound that a dobro produces is commonly used by blues, country, folk and bluegrass musicians. There are 2 main types of dobro guitar the 'Roundnecks', which are favored by blues players and can be held like a normal guitar; then there's the 'Squarenecks' preferred by bluegrass musicians who play them using fingerpicks and a slider while it's on its back.
Because the strings on a dobro guitar are set high above the fret board musicians can use a slider to create a soulful and warm sound that works well in both blues and country songs.
Learning To Play The Dobro
If you're interested in learning this amazing instrument, then you've made a great choice. Whether you've chosen the roundneck or squareneck dobro, both involve a good deal of technical finger picking with the square neck requiring you to play in a completely different position then you're used to.
Overall, it is possible to learn the dobro guitar basics on your own or using online guitar lessons but because it is such a specialized instrument you'll gain faster insight through online guitar lessons or one to one practice with an expert.
To give you a better idea of the uniqueness of the dobro guitar, here are several guitar facts about the dobro that may help you make up your mind about learning.
Dobro Guitar Tuning - Tuning a dobro is slightly different from tuning a guitar; the strings on the dobro are usually tuned differently depending on the type of music that you want to play. For example to create that bluegrass twang the strings are tuned to an open key of 'G' going G,D,B,G,B,D from the bottom string up. To get a more bluesy feel you could try tuning the strings to E7, which would look like B,D,E,G#,B,E; though its recommended that you stick with the popular open G key before trying any others.
Finger Picking And Sliding - Most musicians choose to play the dobro for its cool folk sound; you'll find that most of the music made with this instrument involves using thumb/finger picks for faster plucking and a slide bar to bend the notes. Using these together requires patience and practice to master; also as the guitar has steel parts to amplify the sound the player needs to take care to dampen the excess sound by lightly touching the strings so that each note or chord gives off a clean or muffled sound.
Playing On Your Lap - If you're used to playing a traditional guitar then you'll probably start by playing the dobro slung over your shoulder. Though if you're completely new to guitars then it's probably best to learn this instrument with it on your lap as it allows you more freedom for your finger picking and sliding. Because the strings are raised so high off the neck playing a dobro on your lap allows you more control of the pressure that you use to push downwards on the strings.

In order to get album covers for your missing album artwork it is highly recommended that you use a software program instead of trying to do it yourself manually. With a software program it makes it much easier for you and it frees up some of your time.
